MONTREAL -- Rookie Martin Jones is already making a little Kings history. In Los Angeless 6-0 thumping of the Canadiens on Tuesday night, Jones became the first Kings goaltender to ever record a shutout against Montreal. And he did it in just his third career NHL game. Jones is now 3-0 with a 0.65 goals-against-average and a .973 save percentage. The shutout was also his second in as many nights. "Maybe I didnt expect to get that kind of start, but I dont want to stop here," said Jones. "I want to make sure I keep working. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Were playing some good teams." The 23-year-old from North Vancouver, B.C., earned his first win in his NHL debut last Tuesday, beating the Anaheim Ducks after a nine-round shootout. He followed up by making 16 saves to blank the New York Islanders on Saturday. "Its been nice to get wins in different ways," said Jones. "Thats the sign of a good team, we get wins in different situations." Jones got the start in Montreal in place of Ben Scrivens, who leads the league in save percentage. And Scrivens is normally backup goaltender to Jonathan Quick, whos out with a groin injury. With Quick expected back in a couple of weeks, Jones performance could force head coach Darryl Sutter to make a tough decision down the road. "Whenever Im called upon, theyre going to get my best," said Jones. They got his best on Tuesday at the Bell Centre, where Jones stopped all 30 shots he faced, including a seven-shot opening game flurry with the Canadiens on the power play. "If Jones wasnt making the saves he was making, it could have been a completely different ball game right off the start," said Anze Kopitar, who rewarded his netminder with a goal late in the first period, his ninth of the year. "He came up big for us. That game could have gone the complete opposite way." L.A.s (20-7-4) victory extended its winning streak to four games, snapping Montreals 10-game point streak in the process. The Canadiens (19-10-3) hadnt lost in regulation since Nov. 16, when they were beaten 1-0 by the New York Rangers. They came into Tuesdays game on an 11-1-2 run in which they hadnt conceded more than three goals in a game. But they conceded six on the Kings 30 shots. Carey Price, whose save percentage dipped to .934 after the game, made 12 saves on 16 shots and was pulled midway through the second frame. His replacement Peter Budaj didnt fare much better, allowing two goals on 14 shots. "These games are miserable," said Canadiens defenceman Josh Gorges. "The only thing you can do is get out of this room here, take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself, Did I do what I was supposed to do tonight? Theres not one guy in this room that can say that he did. "We have to understand that this is how hard it is in this league. We have to use it as motivation going forward." The Canadiens came out of the gate with intense pressure, but couldnt find an answer to Joness stellar play. Jordan Nolan opened the scoring for Los Angeles at 7:03 of the first period, jumping on a big rebound after a Willie Mitchell shot from the blue-line bounced off of Prices pads and landed on Nolans stick. Kopitar added to the lead with only 13 seconds remaining in the period, catching Price out of position after winning the faceoff to his right. "We had a quick huddle just before the faceoff," said Kopitar. "We didnt draw it up quite as good as we executed, but well take it. "That was obviously a big momentum changer." The Kings opened the second period ready to build on that momentum. Alec Martinez scored early in the period after Montreal defender Alexei Emelin lost the puck in his skates in front of the net. Tyler Toffoli put the Kings ahead 4-0 at 5:28, firing home a big rebound past a sprawling Price, who was pulled after the goal. Jake Muzzin added to the lead on the power play at 8:14, and Justin Williams made it 6-0 with his team-leading 11th goal at 18:28. Jones was thankful his team did what they could to preserve his shutout bid late in the game. "The guys didnt stop playing even though we had that six-goal lead," said Jones. "Guys continued to block shots and get in lanes, and take away sticks in front of the net." Notes: L.A. hadnt beaten the Canadiens in seven encounters dating back to March 2003. The Kings last win in Montreal was in 1999. a Francis Bouillon was back in the lineup after missing six of the last 10 games as a healthy scratch. Bouillon got the nod in place of Douglas Murray. The Bengals will be slightly different next season as they try to end one of the NFLs longest runs of playoff misery. The Bengals promoted linebackers coach Paul Guenther to defensive co-ordinator on Thursday, keeping continuity for a unit that finished No. 3 in the NFL last season. The move came one day after the Minnesota Vikings hired Mike Zimmer as their head coach. Its also the second time in two weeks that Cincinnati replaced a co-ordinator with an in-house candidate. They elevated running backs coach Hue Jackson to offensive co-ordinator after Jay Gruden was hired by the Redskins as head coach. "Were going to have some new coaches, and its great for us," coach Marvin Lewis said on Thursday. "Some new blood, some new energy. Because we cant be the same. We dont get to be the same. Weve got to be better in 2014 than we were in 13, and thats what our quest is right away." The Bengals won the AFC North this season, but couldnt shake their legacy of flaming out in the playoffs. They lost to San Diego 27-10 in the opening round at Paul Brown Stadium, making it 23 years since they last won a playoff game, tied for the sixth-longest streak in NFL history. Theyve also tied the NFL record by losing their opening game three years in a row. And Lewis is 0-5 in the playoffs during his 11 seasons in Cincinnati, trailing Jim Mora by one for the most consecutive playoff losses to start a coaching career. "I want to still be playing a year from now," said Lewis, who is entering the final year on his contract. The Bengals are the first team since the 2006 San Diego Chargers to lose both co-ordinators to head coaching jobs elsewhere, according to STATS LLC. Zimmer presided over one of the Bengals best stretches of defence during his six seasons in Cincinnati. The Bengals finished in the Top 10 for fewest yards allowed in four of the last five seasons. Guenther has spent nine seasons on Cincinnatis coaching staff, the last two with the linebackers. He worked wiith Zimmer to formulate the defensive plays.dddddddddddd "Since the first day he got here, Ive been by his side most of the time," Guenther said. "If you look back at our defence in 2008, it has transformed to now. Weve sat side-by-side and put a lot of this stuff together." Zimmer wanted to bring Guenther with him to Minnesota as his defensive co-ordinator, but Guenther decided to stay in Cincinnati. "Ive got young kids; I didnt have to move my family," Guenther said. "Ive got good players that I really like and care for. And really at the end of the day, that was probably the one thing that I said: OK, I feel bad for these guys, this guys leaving and that guys leaving (as co-ordinators) and these guys deserve a good situation." The Bengals will be getting a couple of their defensive stars back from injury. Top cornerback Leon Hall tore an Achilles tendon and defensive tackle Gen Atkins tore a knee ligament during the season. The defence has a core of young players led by Pro Bowl linebacker Vontaze Burfict. One of the biggest challenges for Guenther will be calling the plays during games. Zimmer was known for his ability to anticipate what the opposing offence would do and get into a defence that contained it. "Youve got to understand (the opposing offence) better than they understand themselves," Lewis said. "Mike was excellent at that. Going forward, thats going to be the challenge of Paul in this situation in this role. Hes not been that." Guenther sat with the coaches in a booth on game days and was part of the discussions about which defence to call. "There is a lot of communication going on every play: What do you like here? What do you like there? To be honest with you, I could sit up in the press box and probably 95 per cent of the time know what was going to come out of his mouth," Guenther said. "Being around the guy and understanding how he calls the game, certain situations, you know it. Its just a matter of going out there and doing it." ' ' '
